Attiq made these claims after accusing Meera’s mother and his (supposed) mother-in-law, Shafqat Begum, of secretly shifting some antique furniture from his home without his permission.

According to reports in the local media, Attiq had filed a complaint against Shafqat Begum at the Defence-A Police Station whose SHO Inspector Abid Rasheed confirmed that he had seen the nikahnama (marriage certificate), according to which the marriage was solemnised on September 2, 2007 and also registered with the local union council. The SHO further said that verified the claim after questioning the nikahkhawan in Makkah Colony, who had performed the nikah. Pictures of the marriage were also reportedly released to some TV channels.

Meanwhile, Meera has denied the news of her marriage, adding that Attiq was merely a former business partner who has been threatening her ever since she withdrew from the business. At a press conference called at her house in DHA Lahore on Sunday, she called him a ‘terrorist’ who ‘attacked her house, aiming to abduct and kill her.’

On the day of the incident, she alleged that more than 10 gangsters attacked her house and tortured her brother-in-law and sister. She said she was [fortunately] out of the house as the terrorists intended to kill her.

‘I have been continuously receiving threatening calls by a special group of terrorists headed by Attiqur Rehman,’ she said, and demanded security from the Punjab government.

However, when Attiq contacted the police on ‘Emergency 15′, he said his father-in-law, mother-in-law and their other son-in-law, Raheel, were beating him.

The actress further said that Governor Punjab Salman Taseer had assured her protection but she demanded the Chief Minister of Punjab to provide her security.

The health ministry announced in a statement late on Monday that the most recent victims were four people in western Maharashtra state, which has seen 55 deaths from the A(H1N1) virus.

The official figures showed that there have been nearly 4,000 confirmed cases of the virus overall. More than 1,600 were in Maharashtra, with many in the city of Pune, some 120 kilometres (75 miles) southeast of Mumbai.

India’s first confirmed case of swine flu was in May. The first death was on August 3.

Fears about contracting swine flu led to huge queues forming outside government hospitals while the rising death toll led to the temporary closure of schools and cinemas in and around Mumbai and Pune.

All 22 international airports have been testing travellers arriving from countries affected by swine flu.

India’s health minister has warned that the country, home to 1.2 billion people, should brace for a ‘large-scale’ swine flu pandemic, as more indigenous cases of the virus were reported. -AFP

Several nations including Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Philippines have already announced they will phase out or restrict sales of traditional bulbs as well. In 2007, President George W. Bush signed a bill that calls for the bulb to be phased out in the US beginning in 2012, AP reports.

The new European Union rules follow an agreement reached by the 27 EU governments last year to phase out the traditional incandescent lightbulb over three years starting this year to help European countries lower greenhouse gas emissions, the EU executive said Monday.

This aims to curb climate change and to reduce energy bills.

As of Tuesday, old standard frosted lightbulbs and clear bulbs of 100 watts and more will no longer be manufactured or imported into the EU as part of the plan.

The traditional incandescent bulbs are being replaced by long-life fluorescent or halogen lamps.

Consumers will still be able to buy the older bulbs until supplies run out. The EU says the switch from incandescent bulbs to more efficient ones will bring energy savings of 25 per cent to 75 per cent compared to the traditional bulbs.

The EU’s executive has said the measure will save households up to euro50 ($71) a year and pump up to euro10 billion ($14 billion) into the economy.

The measure is part of a series of energy-saving measures planned by the EU to cut emissions of the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming and to reduce energy expenditure.

Energy-strapped Tajikistan announced Monday it will ban the import of incandescent lightbulbs in an effort to conserve power. The move by the impoverished Central Asian country is meant to lessen Tajikistan’s reliance on imported electricity.

Severe power shortages hit Tajikistan last winter after an import deal broke down. At the peak of the shortages, power was limited to 11 hours a day in the capital, Dushanbe, and about four hours a day elsewhere.

The incandescent bulb, which is little changed since Thomas Edison invented it in the 19th century, uses more power than energy-saving fluorescent lightbulbs and halogen lamps.
